Osteopathy in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

Helping you move beyond pain

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a primary care profession focused on diagnosing, treating and preventing musculoskeletal problems. Rather than just looking at where it hurts, osteopaths consider how your lifestyle, work and daily demands might be contributing to how you feel. Using many of the same assessment methods as conventional medicine, the goal is to get you back to normal life as quickly as possible.

Treatment is hands-on and usually involves a combination of manipulation, stretching and massage, alongside exercise, advice and education tailored to your recovery.

Back and neck pain are among the most common reasons people seek osteopathic care, and both are conditions where manual therapy is recommended as part of treatment in national guidelines. Beyond that, osteopaths regularly help with shoulder, knee, hip, ankle and elbow pain, sports injuries, arthritic pain and tension related-headaches.

When you visit

What to Expect

Your first visit is relaxed and unhurried. We’ll take up to an hour together. Everything you share stays confidential.

We’ll start with a chat about your symptoms and medical history, so I can build a clear picture of what’s going on.

I’ll then assess how you’re moving and how your body is responding. I’ll explain what I think is going on, how I may be able to help and what progress might look like. If you’re happy to go ahead, we can get started with treatment in the same appointment.

Follow-up appointments are usually around 30 minutes and focus on treatment and monitoring your progress.

Each session includes a reassessment to see how you’re responding and adapting to the treatment plan accordingly. Most people need between 3-6 sessions, though this varies depending on the individual and their condition.

If possible, please wear loose-fitting clothing. Sportswear, leggings or shorts work well. For shoulder, hip or knee appointments in particular, a vest top or shorts are especially helpful.

It’s not uncommon to feel some soreness for a day or two after treatment. This is completely normal and usually settles quickly. You’re welcome to bring a friend or family member if that helps you feel more comfortable during your appointment.

If you have any questions before or after your appointment, you’re always welcome to get in touch.
